Kevin Woodhurst, President of Precision Aquascapes LLC, is an award -winning swimming pool designer, builder, and industry consultant who resides in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a 16 year veteran of the swimming pool industry, and a 31 year veteran of general construction and technical maintenance. In 2011 Kevin introduced ECO-smart / ECO-advantage pools to the Phoenix area via his relationship with Dolphin Pools and Spas.
Kevin has owned and managed several very progressive and successful swimming pool construction companies. He worked at Dolphin Pools and Spas from Jan 2011 to April 2012. He left Dolphin Pools to move on to other projects and endeavors. Kevin sold his previous company, Precision Pools and Spas, to a competing pool builder in 2006/2007. He has designed, built, and/or managed the construction of nearly 4000 projects in his career. His projects include many negative or vanishing edge pools, perimeter-overflow pool pools, and a multitude of highly complex and custom projects. Many of his projects have been featured in industry trade publications.
Kevin has promoted ECO-smart / ECO-advantage style "green" pools and building practices for over 16 years. He was one of the first builders to focus on low maintenance, low waste, minimal chemical use pools in the industry. He continues to provide and promote these practices and other "green" building techniques today. Kevin has an active and influential role in local and national pool industry associations and publications. He understands the importance of furthering his knowledge within the pool industry. He has attained hundreds of hours of education, both as a student, and as an instructor. He has extensive experience on numerous topics such as; advanced pool design and construction, advanced hydraulics, pool renovations, service, and repair, as well as safety and standards writing. Furthermore, Kevin has been one of the instructor-trainers for the Pool Genius Academies, Pool Technology courses. These include instruction and training on swimming pool construction and renovations. Currently Kevin is the Education Director on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Pool & Spa Association.

In 1996 Kevin joined industry visionary and veteran Rex Richard with 'Build Your Own Pool" a company that Rex and Kevin together grew from less than 100 pool projects per year to well over 500 projects per year in 2003 the year Kevin departed to form another business.
Precision Pools was founded in the spring of 2003 and in just a few short months became one of the fastest growing pool companies in Arizona or across the country. In year #2 Precision Pools and Spas was voted the number #1 Pool Company in Arizona by "Ranking Arizona", building hundreds of pools annually, a position Precision Pools and Spas held until 2006 when Kevin was approached by Premier Pools and Spas and chose to sell Precision to Premier Pools. Kevin departed Premier Pools in 2007 briefly moving on to opportunities.
After taking a short break from the Pool Industry Kevin made arrangements to join Dolphin Pools and Spas in late 2010 he assumed the position of General Manager and VP of Operations.
Kevin's influence and leadership at Dolphin Pools and Spas put them back on the fast track of growth and by mid 2011 Dolphin Pools and Spas had surpassed the previous years production. In August 2011 acording to the "Rider Permit Report" Dolphin Pools was up over 65% from 2010 and 113% from 2011. 2012 looks like yet another big growth year for Dolphin after laying the foundation for growth prior to his departure in April 2012.
Kevin states, "with a plan and the right people (as people will always be your most valuable resource) nearly anything is possible, you just have to believe it first, create the vision and plan, implement it and move forward". And of course it helps to build a high quality product and take care of the customer...
In the end customers are never looking for the cheapest price or pool, they are just worried about getting ripped off, our industry placed that label on itself, its up to all of us to work on that. Please join me!

Kevin spent 13 years in the USAF & Idaho ANG serving around the globe on KC-10, KC-135 and F4 Aircraft, one of his favorite past times is flying though these days it is not often. He enjoys sports, coaching, motorcycles and traveling. Kevin is originally from Boise Idaho.

Kevin is driven to bring ECO-smart / ECO-advantage "Green" building and operations to the pool industry. Whether it is building low maintenance, low energy, low chemical cunsumption and minimal water waste pools to operationally managing a "Green" friendly and environmentally responsible business. It is time to move the industry out of it's coma and move beyond doing things the same old way. The technology is there and the desire is certainly there with Kevin.
He is extremely committed to enhancing and contributing to the industry through his efforts of getting builders and designers to work closer together and collaborate in a way that better benefits the industry. This is a small industry and within in it are a few that truly love what they do and deliver it each day, to them it is more than just a business. It is a passion for a lifestyle that people think about and work towards daily. He states, "We are all dream makers, swimming pools are a luxury item and as such we owe it to the public to deliver excellence and a high quality product".
Kevin enjoys friendships across the country and around the world with some of the most talented tradespeople, designers, builders and industry consultants. He has traveled much of the globe and has a knack and eye for architectural design and innovation. Through this expansive network of peers and travels as well as his extensive background in construction he continues to add to his legacy of work.

Building Credibility
There are many ways to build credibility, enhance skills and move beyond the status quo in our industry. Some of these take longer than others and some of these can build real value very quickly. The longest way to build credibility would be to open a business and keep it in business for an extended period of time. This is why you see companies advertise; “Oldest Pool Company”, “Serving Arizona for 25 years”, or “Established in 1972” and any number of varying slogans depicting length in business.
Another option would be to apply yourself in multiple aspects of our industry; Such as operations, sales, construction, marketing as well as many other areas. The problem here is that if you are like most people you may only have the opportunity to work in one or two of these areas over the course of a few years. It will take a very persistent and dedicated individual to get this type of an opportunity with a very progressive organization. Besides, many organizations have the mentality of not wanting to train future competition. I have never understood this philosophy but have heard this many times over the years. Personally, I would prefer to have competent competition rather than not. In the big picture the latter is better for our industry than the former way of thinking.
Still another path would be to attend industry training events, obtain certifications, and take general courses related to sales, design, construction, business management and others. Becoming a lifetime student to your trade and occupation will bare fruit quickly and much of it is low hanging and ripe for the taking. Spending time in the field with vendors, manufacture reps, trades people and suppliers will open your eyes to yet another world and perspective.
The percentage of people that take advantage of training within our industry on a regular basis is very low. I have often asked myself why? I have interviewed many individuals over the years and often regardless of how long someone has been in our industry I have heard the same thing over and over; “I know everything about pools”. “Really”, I have been at this for a long time and the longer I do this the more I realize how much there is to learn and to ultimately master. Seriously, if you know it all, you are kidding yourself and here lies the problem.
Across the board, I am often amazed at really how little many people know about swimming pools, some of them having been around the industry for years or even decades. There is a huge difference with having 20 years of experience or 1 year of experience 20 times over.
In sales this misinformation and lack of technical knowledge gets transferred to an already confused consumer. In construction, mistakes are made that take away from a pool company’s bottom line or hurt an organizations reputation, and finally many projects are completed that barely meet expectations and leave a sour taste in an already suspicious public. All of this hurts our livelihood and industry and at the end of the day we all have a responsibility to make a commitment to move beyond old paradigms and attitudes about education and methodologies. When I consider the word “progressive” and break it down…the first part of that word is “progress”, so I will ask you this, are you making progress in your career or your business or are you just coasting along hoping for the best? Have you been sitting back the past few years waiting for things to get better or are you progressing in a “progressive” way towards an even more promising future in this great industry where we have the privilege of helping people build lifetime dreams and memories? Where do you want to take your career and or business?
So which method is best to build on your credibility? I will suggest a dedicated mental commitment to it all, each and every day. Start with making a list of things you want to learn or improve on, set some short term and long term goals, seek out mentors of all types, find the experts in a particular area and spend some with them, challenge yourself and learn something new as often as possible and finally become a student, a good one at that!
